What to expect

  1. 1

    Eyelid assessment

A physician examines the cholesterol deposits and discusses the best removal approach for this delicate area.

  2. 2

    Numbing

Local anesthetic is gently injected around the lesion; the brief stinging is followed by full numbness in under a minute.

  3. 3

    Surgical removal

The xanthelasma is precisely excised. Most procedures take 20–30 minutes. Anxious patients may pre-medicate.

  4. 4

    Closure & healing

Fine sutures close the incision. Stitches are removed at 5–7 days, with full healing in 2–3 weeks.

  5. 5

    Cholesterol check

We recommend asking your family doctor to check cholesterol levels, as xanthelasma can be associated with elevated lipids.

Real stories from mole-removal patients

Went in for a full body examination. Dr. Khan and the resident doctor were extremely professional and respectful of my privacy. Turns out all of my moles are "benign and even more benign" 😄 Thank you so much for clearing up those worries for me. I will continue to keep my skin covered and out of the sun! 😎⛱️ Highly recommend this mole clinic. They're the best!! ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّٰهِ for Doctor Khan and his team. 🌹💐

Initial reception was excellent and professional. Waiting area very clean and organized. Inside room now, very clean and sterile. Dr assistant excellent as well, super friendly and professional. I am not sure what the difference is between this specialty and family doctors, but I would suggest the majority in this industry to learn a lot from these people, in many ways. Waiting for doctor assessment. Outstanding doctor amazingly professional. Highly reccomend !!!! I almost feel bad nothing medically to help me with. Haha clean bill of health. All the best and success

Frequently asked

Common questions

Is it covered by OHIP?+

Xanthelasma removal is not covered by OHIP — it is considered a cosmetic condition. Patients with private insurance or health/flexible spending accounts can check with their provider to determine if removal is covered.

Is this procedure painful?+

Before surgical removal we inject a local anesthetic around the lesions, which causes a minor stinging sensation for a few seconds. Once the area is numb the removal itself is virtually painless — you may feel some tugging and pulling but most patients tolerate the procedure without difficulty. The procedure takes about 20 to 30 minutes. For anxious patients we can prescribe a medication to take an hour beforehand to ease anxiety.

What causes xanthelasma?+

Xanthelasma is caused by deposition of lipid/fat under the skin in small pockets around the eyes. It is a painless, benign condition and there can be a genetic predisposition. It is sometimes associated with elevated cholesterol, so it is a good idea to have your family doctor check your cholesterol if you have this condition.

How soon will I see results?+

After surgery there will be stitches left in for about 5 to 7 days. There will be some minor bruising, and full healing generally takes about two to three weeks.
